I NEED NEW NOISE

Alright, I’m going to my sister’s wedding next week and a few 6 hour flights ahead of me cause me to review my mp3 collection.

I need something new.

So what is something I should listen to? New. Old. Up. Down. Doesn’t matter. I need input.

This American Life. I never drive to Charlottesville and back without at least 5 one-hour episodes. Along the way, I've built up an impressive library of RealAudio->AIFF->MP3 converted episodes. If you'd like, I'd be happy to send you some MP3s of my favorite episodes.

If you've never heard This American Life then...um... Well, it's an hour-long show, each about some aspect of life in the United States, usually created by some just Joe Average with a tape recording and some brief training in interviewing, each about a specialized topic. The episodes are often riveting, and range from tragic to hysterical. It's the show that made David Sedaris famous.

talk about a loaded question. best music i've acquired so far this year would have to be the new pornographers - electric version.
http://www.thenewpornographers.com/

the latest alien ant farm is surprisingly good too, i think it's called truANT.

I can also put them up somewhere so you can sample them, then immediately delete them after you've decided to purchase.

3. kolonay says:

The following have been gracing my ears of late:

Modest Mouse: Good News for People who Love Bad News
Wilco: A Ghost is Born
Leonard Cohen: Songs of Love and Hate
Elliott Smith: XO, Either/OR
James McMurtry: Live in Aught Three
Pink Floyd: Meddle
Ween: Chocolate and Cheese

I enjoy catching This American Life when I happen to be fortunate enough (or unfortunate as the case may be) to be in my car when it's on, so, I'll second that. Best of luck to you with that whole "music" thing...

well, jump (little children) has a new record out, called between the dim & the dark. and i've become pretty infatuated with the decemberists of late. or, i could send you mp3s of rough mixes of my ep. :)

5. Nikki says:

The new Loretta Lynn album, produced by Jack White is pretty damn good. And i'm REALLY enjoying Elvis Costello (The Very Best of..), The Hot, Hot, Heat, and the Very Best of Otis Redding.
Oh and Grandaddy's Sumday.

:)

Ditto on Pete's suggestion. I've been listening to New Pornographers' Electric Version obsessively for about a year now. It's where rock should be, if we hadn't gone through the shitty detour of the late 70s through the early 90s.

I finally got, incidentally, Patty Griffin's 1,000 Kisses, her first ATO release. Dang. It's great. Especially "Tomorrow Night," which seems to appear over and over and over again on my blog's sidebar (which tracks what I listen to in iTunes, real-time). It's a bit embarrassing, frankly. But not nearly as embarrassing as when John Mayer's "Your Body is a Wonderland" appears on that little sidebar. ;)

Check out Sun Kil Moon's album, "Ghosts of the Great Highway." It's kinda folky and kinda rocky at the same time. Also, Elbow's "Cast of Thousands" is pretty good Radiohead-y type stuff.

8. Laura says:

a few of my on the road favorites from the last few months:

the shins - chutes too narrow
modest mouse - good news for people who love bad news
franz ferdinand - fraz ferdinand
stellastarr* - stellastarr*
hot hot heat - make up the breakdown
the bens ep

9. chef says:

i know it's cheesy to like bands that Spin likes but The Killers latest is pretty cool.

10. jen says:

lamb
goldfrapp
cibo matto (stereotype A is the best album)
the lost in translation soundtrack rocks it
